Magic in Mazama

Now that I've booked it for my birthday week and no one can steal it, I feel comfortable spilling the tea on where we find beautiful places to stay in the North Cascades.

The first time we went to the Methow Valley, I took Raz to the Rolling Huts for his birthday. They often have Groupons and I snagged one. It was a great deal because his birthday is in the off-season and we had a wonderful time. So much fun, in fact, we talked more about returning to that area than about going anywhere else (and trust our list is long).

The Rolling Huts are great, but my booty got a little cold on the attached—but freezing— bathroom seat, so I wanted to find us other options. Last summer, we took Oliver on his first road trip and stayed right downtown Winthrop in the cutest little studio apartment

When we decided we wanted to return this winter, I found us a bunch of beautiful, brand new cabins on the Winthrop/Mazama border through Central Reservations. We have been SO pleased with the whole experience.

I cannot say enough good things about the team at this local vacation rental company. The water was off in the community where our cabin, Asa, is located when we got there. Even though it wasn't a huge deal to us (we brought in snow and boiled it—so funny), they comped us one night of our stay AND comped a night of a future stay. They and the local property manager kept us updated over the 24 hours or so it took to get the water back on and we felt completely taken care of, treated like a part of the community even though we were just passing through. The cabin itself has a record player and an amazing selection of music. It has a TV on wheels and DVDs so you can watch movies or not watch movies. It has strategically-placed crystals.

This area of the world still feels a little wild, very quiet, somewhat undiscovered. There is lore about the community fighting against a few attempts at big ski resorts, the plans for which have been started and stopped several times over the past few decades. There are signs around town that say "Everyone is welcome here." It's a bit of a hippie haven. All of this adds to its magic.

As much as I love Lake Chelan and the history of our cabin and family there, it can be a bit too busy for us sometimes and escaping to the mountains only an hour and a half away from it feels even more peaceful. Cell service is hard to come by, there is a FANTASTIC Italian restaurant in nearby Twisp open only 5-9 p.m. Friday through Sunday, one of our favorite little winery tasting rooms, and trails galore. Plus, the Mazama store is a hipster foodie paradise I'd blow a whole paycheck shopping at if I was let loose for a few hours on my own (while munching one of their famous baguettes, of course).

The only season we haven't visited the Methow is in the fall. Looks like I have some booking to do...

If you go, please let me know! I'd love to hear from you anywhere on the socials (@whitpopa), in the comments here, or via email: whitneytbndATgmail.com. Happy deep breathing!
